Intermediate Hoof Trimming Course

Course Details:

This three day course is CHCSB and Lantra accredited, and aims to provide each delegate with the knowledge and skills required to effectively hoof trim cattle, both for routine trims and identifying and treating the most common lesions causing lameness on farm.

The course will cover:

• Overview of foot anatomy and lesion develpment
• Identification of lesions causing lameness
• Mobility scoring
• Handling, lifting and examination of a foot
• The 5-step method
• Tools for the job - safe use of both knives and grinders, and knife sharpening
• Practical trimming and lesion treatment / blocking on both cadaver limbs and live cows
• Success factors for lameness prevention in the herd

The course includes a competency assessment in the form of an MCQ test and practical exam to achieve the qualification and certificate.
