Bluetongue Vaccine Reporting - Legal Requirements

In order to help animal keepers protect their animals against the ongoing Bluetongue-3 Virus outbreak the use of an unauthorised vaccine was granted by the Secretary of State.

The use of the vaccine is permitted under several conditions, including stringent record keeping requirements which are the duty of the animal keeper to uphold:

1. The animal keeper must complete an online recording form no more than 48 hours after administering each dose. Visit the following link to fulfil this obligation: 

    

    

2. Written or digital records must be kept of every animal vaccinated and must be provided to an inspector on request. These need to be retained for 5 years by the animal keeper and must include:

    

   1. Species vaccinated

   2. Individual permanent ID number (ear tag or other permanent official animal ID)

   3. Date of 1st dose

   4. Date of any further doses

   5. Vaccine product name and batch number

   6. Name and job title of the person who administered the vaccine

   7. Dose administered (ml)

   8. Route of administration (i.e. intramuscularly or subcutaneously)

   9. The stated withdrawal period of the vaccine used

   10. Any excess doses (opened or otherwise) and the amount (ml) 

       1. (Note that these need to be returned to the prescribing vet)

   11. CPH and address of the holding where vaccination took place

3.  Any adverse side effects associated with the vaccine, including suspected lack of efficacy, should be reported within 7 calendar days of the adverse effects first being observed.

    

   1. Report these to the relevant pharmaceutical company (as detailed on the package leaflet) or the Veterinary Medicines Directorate
